Meadowhall Shopping Centre in Sheffield

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Meadowhall shopping centre is a large out of town shopping centre located in Sheffield, close to the Rotherham border. The centre was built in the mid nineteen nineties and has experienced considerable success since it’s launch. The centre offers the flexibility for people to shop in the evenings, when most other shops are closed. This is perfect for the young, affluent crowd who cannot get into the city centres during the day. The centre also boasts free parking, another benefit over the inner-town shops.

Meadowhall’s shops suit almost every taste, from the Pound Shop, right down to Karren Millen and Hobbs. Shoppers can buy almost anything from a cheap mac mini to a pair of fitflops. There are plenty of shops that kids could spend hours browsing in; such as the Disney Store, or Warner Brothers. A creche facility is available for smaller children, meaning parents can leisureley shop around safe in the knowledge their kids are safe and having a good time. For the more bohemian of shoppers, there is an area in Meadowhall known as ‘The Lanes’ which has everything from comic books, to handmade jewellery.

The food hall at Meadowhall shopping centre is called The Oasis. It is a large circular area with a big screen on one site. The centre of the area is filled with tables and chairs, and around the outside, there are a variety of hot and cold food outlets. You can buy almost anything; from jacket potato to McDonalds, or from a sandwich to a cornish pasty meal. Overlooking The Oasis is the amusement arcade and cinema. The arcade is popular with teenagers and fills up at weekend. Toys can be won by collecting vouchers from the computer game machines, much like an old fun fair.

The shopping centre suffered terribly in the 2007 floods, which caused mayhem across most of South Yorkshire. The ground floor of Meadowhall was submerged in water, and the centre was shut for around two weeks. The problem was cleared up, and the centre has remained open ever since.
