Moving Past Your Comfort Zone

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

We all gravitate toward what we feel most comfortable doing. We avoid going to certain places or doing certain things, because we’re afraid of failing or of looking foolish or any number of other (often unfounded) fears. So instead of taking on a new challenge, we stick with the tried and true. It’s called staying in your comfort zone and it is one of the biggest roadblocks to leading a truly fulfilling life.

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably among the majority of people who regret not having taken certain chances in their lives. Maybe it’s something from back in High School –like not trying to talk to someone you felt attracted to. Or maybe it was not asking for that promotion at work a few months ago. The point is – each of us likes to hover in our own comfortable little space, often at the cost of missing out on being truly happy. And, let me tell you, there’s nothing worse then letting your life slip by because you don’t feel comfortable taking chances once in a while.

So what can you do? —Start with baby steps…

You’ll be surprised what a small amount of effort can do for your self confidence. About 6 months past my 40th birthday, I (for the first time in my life) joined a Gym. That was a big step for me, as being a sedate, “computer guy” caused me to really pack on the pounds. I was self-conscious about not only my weight but also my age (I was expecting to see only very thin 20 something’s working out). Anyway, as soon as I made the commitment to hit the gym, I started feeling better about myself. It was the simple fact that I had moved past my comfort zone and made a decision to do something different. That small step was the catalyst that got me out of the slump of sitting in front of my computer all day.

Today, I’m at the gym pretty much 6 days a week. I’ve move past just walking the treadmill, now I do weight training plus I’m taking Yoga and Kickboxing classes. And guess what, those very thin 20 something’s aren’t really that intimidating after all.

My point is, once you make even a small change it gives your confidence a boost and you start looking for the next challenge. And make no mistake, when you finally break out of your comfort zone, the whole world looks different!

Work, Action, Movement -You Cannot Get Anywhere Without It

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

“You can’t get anywhere in anything without work, action, movement..whatever you want to call it.” Scott Haines

Just getting on with doing something however poorly is important. Mike Litman talks about how you can upgrade your conversation if you just get on with things by taking action.

He uses the example of one man or woman talking about getting a website up. He or she talks for 6 months. This is boring!

Another man or woman takes speedy action and gets his or her website up in one week. It is not perfect but he or she can now move on. They are no longer talking about putting up the website. They are talking about bringing in traffic. This is exciting! They have moved on but can still improve their website as they go. They have moved from being nervous about putting up their website to being excited about it.

Another person might dither about starting an ezine. Another just starts one. She might lose many subscribers as she goes but at least her ezine is improving and more and more subscribers stay on. Her talk is full of excitement and enthusiasm.

Someone talks about writing a book. Another one just starts writing every day and gets on with it. His or her book may not be great but it can be improved. The talk is no longer about writing a book; it is about improving a book and selling it!

About 15 years ago, I took action to open a martial arts school instead of just talking about it. I didn’t feel too confident and my first lesson opened with just one student coming through the door. My marketing had been practically non-existent. However, things soon improved.

Two years later the class was thriving. If you are interested, check out the photo on the home page of my self-defence site.
The URL for this is listed below. The photo on the right is of my class in 1992, about two years after the one student had appeared. The school is still going strong in 2005.

Eva Gregory has written a great quote:

“Inspired action is the difference in potential and actuality.”

However, sometimes uninspired action is also the difference. We cannot always afford to wait for inspiration. Inspiration often arrives after we have started. If a thing is worth doing it is worth doing badly at first and improving later.

This is the basic principle behind brainstorming. Early criticism kills a creative discussion. Early criticism can stop creative action in its tracks.

Of course, it helps, to plan and learn the necessary skills but if you wait too long for these your project will die. Action, movement and work are essential.

Above all, if you take action on things, you will live an exciting although not necessarily a comfortable life!

Correct Your Mindset and Expel The Fear

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

The main problem with many of us is we loose our direction in life. We have great aspirations upon leaving school or college but then just loose direction or do not know how to achieve our dreams. We are all taught the academic basics needed to function in today’s world. We may then study further to achieve a qualification in a particular field. But we are never taught how to achieve real success. You need far more then just qualifications to make a success of your life. It’s a fact that many people have left school with very few or no qualifications, but have still been very successful.

To be successful requires a certain mindset. It’s not “what we do but the way that we do it”, that counts. Two individuals from the same background with the same qualifications could start the same business. One could fail whilst the other could grow and expand into a multi-national business. So its not your education, it’s not your background and it’s definitely not luck, it’s your mindset.

Look. Don’t say to yourself, “oh that’s all very well but you need money to make money”, or “you need luck to succeed”. You don’t. With the correct mindset, focus and an understanding of how things work, you will create wealth and luck for yourself in abundance.

Have you ever wondered why you persist in an unsatisfying relationship, or why you are unwilling either to work towards a solution or to find an end and move on?

It is because you fear the unknown. The action you take changes things and will lead to the unknown. You believe that the unknown will be more painful then what you are already experiencing.

A very old proverb says. “The better the devil you know than the devil you don’t” These beliefs keep you from taking actions that could change your life. If you want to change you life for the better, then you have to overcome your fears by overriding this preconditioned set of responses.

It is possible to link pain and fear to an unknown event. For example; you have never flown before and you are scared of flying in an airplane. You are frightened for no logical reason. You might have read about a plane, which crashed in the paper. And consequently believe your plane may crash. The truth is this fear a fear of the unknown. Before you can fear it you must experience it. You must make sure that you live your life in the present and respond to things, which are real. Do not allow your fears of what once was or what might someday be.

The key thing to remember is that you do not move away from real fear or pain, you move away from what you believe will lead to fear or pain.

Most people will never succeed because they cannot master the power of concentration, the power of the mind or the power of the universe. Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can command when we focus all of our resources on a single area of our lives. It is a fact that all people both men and women can make a success of their life and can achieve great riches in both monetary terms and ultimate happiness.

Mark Claridge specializes in teaching motivational and self-development skills. In his new book “Mindset and Match” he covers amongst other subjects how having the correct mindset can bring you all you want out of life and is available at http://www.mindsetandmatch.com.

Time is Not Money

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Yesterday I had a letter conversation with a new friend in which I was reminded of a lesson taught me by a local friend with whom I often have conversation. This friend and I are retired. She is retired and caring for her elderly father, which means she is more tied down than a teenager on restriction. My elderly parents are more able and my time is largely my own, as it has been for much of the past two decades.

The lesson I am repeatedly taught is: Other people have lives – they do not have the time you have. The implication of course, that I have no life and ought to get one. I have heard the expression enough, yet no matter how it was said, I always considered it just one option of many. Most folks have lives I would never want for me. They are welcome to keep them and build whatever they choose.

When I chose time and limited freedom, over money and limited freedom, I was unaware there was any workable compromise between the two things that would in fact, increase my freedom. Now I know there is. I can make time budgets instead of, or in conjunction with setting material goals.

For more than 25 years, I have been self employed part time, thinking I had chosen a lifestyle to which I was committed. When opportunities came along which would increase the value of my labor with only a temporary demand on my time, I ignored them. After all, I had made a commitment. Great big mistake, that. Due to age and the internet my world has tremendously expanded. I see it possible to strike a compromise – a better balance. Now I am ready to sacrifice some of that precious time to learn about automated marketing.

The friend I wrote yesterday opened a response with a question. “What do you want to sell? This is the internet.” This is a deceptively tough question. I know because about thirty years ago, I learned I could do and be anything and anybody I wanted. Who and what did I want to be? It took a few years to decide on simplicity. I wanted to be a simple man, living a simple life. I have only succeeded halfway. I have the simple life but with all the interests I have accumulated over my lifetime, I find it impossible to be a simple man. Some would argue the point.

As my spiritual and emotional enlightenment proceeds in leaps and pregnant pauses that sometimes leave me a bit anxious, I see a have your cake and eat it future for the survivors who want it; as well as in these years leading up to near future catastrophes. I think I am going to eat more cake.

How To Create A Mini-Journal

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Copyright 2005 Writer’s Eye Advisory Service

For really busy days, it’s nice to be able to journal on something small. It makes it easier to keep up with daily activities, if you keep some 3×5 cards nearby and jot notes on them. I can remember not liking index cards in school, because they always reminded me of Dewey decimal system and finishing school reports on time. However, in college index cards became my ally in keeping track of my off-topic thoughts during college lectures. It made it so much easier, when I could jot something down, so I wouldn’t forget it and still keep up with class. Now, I can make a mini—journal with these cards. Or I write some of my articles on cards, making sure to keep them in order. When I get home, I can put the article into it’s computer file or in an envelope and tape it into my journal. I also keep track of business ideas when I’m showing my jewelry, so that I don’t lose track of changes I need to make or credit myself for the great work I did. So read on for instructions on how to create your own mini-journal.

PURCHASE INDEX CARDS: My favorite index cars are 3 x 5 ruled with neon colors. These colors are bright and bold, not like their paler counterparts. You may also create your own cards from collage materials, such as pictures, stationery or other material that you can write an entry on. Use your imagination. You can even use plain white unruled cards. It’s up to you what materials you use. I only suggest that you keep the size consistent or your journal will look a bit asymmetrical.

TYPE OF ENTRY: I would suggest picking one of the following exercises for your mini-journal: write list(s), reminder phrases or sentences, prayer(s), a short doodle, a poem, lyrics, an image(s), your accomplishments, your feelings, a five-minute dialogue, or other valuable information. You can also create your own journal exercises, by combining some from this list or creating totaling unique exercises. After you have read a variety of other’s journal exercises, it becomes easier to imagine and create your own.

CHOOSE A TOPIC(S): Pick a topic that is short. You can always add more index cards as you expand your topic. You decorate one side of this first card like a collage, then start you entry on the other side. Remember to number your pages, they will stay in better order, until you are ready to put them all together.

WRITE YOUR ENTRY: It’s time to write your entry. I’ve given you several examples of exercises you can use. You can always use plain text to to write your entry too. You can write on any topic of interest to you. Here are a few ideas just to get your started: talk about your pet, home, vacation plans, an important phone call, your to-do list, laundry list, grocery list or how you felt after you saw a movie, a recipe, sports scores, goals and writing ideas. These are just a few of the topics you can pick. The most important step that you can take now is to write.

CHOOSE A PLACE FOR YOUR INDEX CARDS: Wrap a rubber band around your cards or put them in an envelope. Make to label and date them so that you can find them later. You can always put them in the back of your paper journal or in a desk drawer. I will show you how to put all of the cards together later on.

PUTTING YOUR MINI-JOURNAL TOGETHER: Put your index cards in the correct order. Make sure to punch two holes overlapping each other either in one or the other corners or in the middle of each card. (You can reinforce the corners with small bit of masking tape). Open up your keyring and slide the cards over it. Close the keyring and you have your mini-journal. (Note: you can use other index card sizes and cord, yarn, or string to bind your cards together, just make sure that the material you choose is strong and will last.)

Enjoy your new minijournal!

How to be the Most Memorable Person at Networking Events

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Most of the people I hear from hate networking. They go only because they know they “should,” but it’s like pulling teeth for them.

If you’ve experienced the usual clammy grip of fear when it’s your time to introduce yourself, the following may help you feel more at home, make deeper, more lasting impressions, and attract voluntary referrals from many of the other attendees.

First, if you want to take some of the pressure off, it can help to consider your first half-dozen events to be nothing but practice.

It helps even more if you go specifically to listen and get to know who’s there, rather than to “sell” your own story. So take along your business cards, but dump your nice four-color 12-page brochures. There’s a better way to make powerful impressions.

Here’s an example that happened to me on Monday.

My wife does a lot of work for an NGO here in Japan that helps North Korean refugees, but I have little direct participation, other than running their English language website ( http://www.northkoreanrefugees.com ).

This past Sunday, we flew over to Seoul for the three-day North Korean Holocaust Exhibition to be held at the Parliamentary building.

The event started with the usual speeches and ribbon-cutting. Then the main organizers all split off, doing individual interviews with journalists. The regular attendees wandered around viewing the exhibits. And those who were there to gather information or disseminate it began mingling, meeting and introducing themselves. In other words, this turned into a networking event.

I wasn’t there to sell anything or to persuade anybody, so I wandered around looking for the people who appeared too intimidated or too shy to mingle. These are the folks who hang back by the wall, or who stand alone looking wistful.

I found two ladies who told me they were doing a paper on refugees, so I led them over to the two main activists (I had exchanged emails with the activists for a couple of years, but had only met them in person minutes earlier).

I walked up, tapped both of the leaders on the arm and said, “Excuse me, but you two need to talk with these ladies. They’re doing research on your topic. I think they may be able to help you tell your story.” Then I backed away and let them have at it.

Later, I met a German journalist who had just arrived in Seoul as the new correspondent for his publisher. I found out what kind of information he was looking for, then led him over to a lady — one of the refugees who had managed to escape through China — and introduced him.

Now, bear in mind, I didn’t even know the lady, and neither he nor I spoke any Korean, but I took him over and we tried talking with her anyway. Sure enough, some people nearby stepped right up and offered to interpret. Again, I just backed away and let them work.

Later, these people came back to me, appreciative and wanting more information about our NGO and website.

When you concentrate on giving and on priming the pump, good stuff can flow. People WILL remember you if you go out of your way to spread THEIR name around. Boy will they remember you.

How to Find Financial Freedom by Overcoming Fear

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Are you still struggling to gain financial freedom? Have you tinkered with the idea of starting your own business or selling a product? What has stopped you from turning this idea into a reality? For many “would be” entrepreneurs the main stumbling block to achieving financial independence is fear. Fear robs you of the confidence and courage to start a thriving business. Listen to Matt Bacak grill entrepreneurial guru John Di Lemme about how to conquer your fear.

Think of the advertisements you see in the media where you can earn $2000 a month or more working part time. Think about the new products that hit the market that make you stop and say, “I thought of that! Why didn’t I take the chance on creating and promoting the product?”

It is true that some of these business opportunities may be less than honest, but for the most part there are self made millionaires that have created legitimate thriving businesses. What do they know that you don’t? They know the origin of fear and how to overcome it. Read on to learn how to overcome your fear and start your own business or entrepreneurial passion that you have always wanted to make a reality.

Fear is such a prevalent affliction that those who overcome the fear are often mocked or told they are crazy. This is a result of societal conditioning that we should earn a classic academic education and find a safe, secure, salary job. This notion can be safe, but the returns on your effort can be much lower then you crave or even deserve. Any divergence from this set of life tasks is viewed as risky and sometimes even crazy when in fact it is the positive side effect of overcoming fear in pursuing your passion.

The secret to overcoming fear is to examine the word “fear”. Each letter in the word stands for a call to action that you can take to squash your fear and get started on the career of your dreams. Let’s take a look at each step in more detail.

Step #1: F = “Face it”. Face your fear head on. Don’t shy away from it. The only way to overcome your fear is to acknowledge it and tackle it with vigor. Many entrepreneurs are challenged about their background and why people should listen to them. Create a response to this question that demonstrates your passion for your business.

Step #2: E = “Extinguish it.” Bombard yourself with self improvement techniques such as mentoring and personal development materials that can help calm your nerves. They will fill you with the knowledge necessary to succeed as an entrepreneur.

Step #3: A = “Attack it.” You have acknowledged your fear. You have sought out personal development resources. Now you must attack the fear by being a fanatic about your success. Work each and everyday to overcome your fear.

Step #4: R = “Return.” The intensity of your fear and come and go with time. If your fear surfaces again, repeat the three previous steps to eliminate it from your life.

Selfishness Vs. Self Esteem

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Have you ever been confused between those choices that are “selfish” and those that boost your “self esteem”?

You’ve probably heard yourself or others making a choice that was supposed to make you feel better about yourself, i.e. boost your self esteem, only to follow it up with a statement like “well I know that perhaps that’s selfish, but it’s a good selfish, and I’m going to do it anyway”

You see there’s a deep confusion between these two concepts in the minds of many. Some may even wonder if they are even separable, correct?

Well I would like to say that not only are they separable, they are diametrically opposite entities that actually originate from very different forces within us. To confuse them for each other only serves to severely undermine your happiness and good feelings about yourself and who you really are.

Let’s look closely at them.

Selfishisness is often associated with negative feelings i.e. like you’re taking something that doesn’t belong to you, undeserving, feelings of low self worth, guilt, self loathing, disgust, nervousness or anxiety, fear of being found out or judged and generally makes you feel badly about yourself. That is it brings you self esteem down!

Self Esteem on the other hand is associated with feelings of lightness, joy, liking one’s self, inner peace, self worth, self acceptance, an I’m OK feeling, happiness, and self confidence, resilience, attractive to others and to one’s self. This is the essence of loving one’s self or having high self esteem.

So why are they ever confused with each other?

Well largely because when you carry within you negative memories where you may have been punished, abused, or judged harshly you then acquire a negative attitude towards yourself that gets stored deep within you. This creates an associated deep unmet need for self appreciation and self validation. You see, without having such validation or appreciation for one’s self life would feel almost intolerable. One would feel totally unworthy, undeserving, depressed and the meaning in life would evaporate.

These needs for self acceptance or validation will spur actions that attempt to restore one’s overall self esteem. Unfortunately because the “need” is held in place, so to speak, by the negative memories I mentioned earlier, the individual will always feel unworthy, even if the needs are met.

So even if they are met the individual cannot own them fully. That is because their early experience has imprinted them with an image of themselves as a person who is “not deserving” of such accolades. So when they are seemingly met the individual will always feel as if they are being “selfish” i.e. getting something that they don’t deserve.

Under such situations self esteem is severely limited and that only deepens the need for self acceptance and validation i.e. makes them more desperate to have them met. As the negative self image is still unconsciously active however a fulfillment of such needs will again be met with a stiff “punishment” i.e. feeling selfish.

There is a way to get around this problem and release one from the inner bondage they are experiencing. That is to completely release the negative memories altogether. Interestingly this not only erases the need altogether it also automatically restores one’s right to self appreciation and validation i.e. boosts their self esteem!
